Early Life:
Born in Inglewood, California, Willis has a unique background shaped by her father, John C. Floyd III, a founding member of a faction of the Black Panthers who later became disillusioned by internal conflicts. Her given name is Fani (pronounced fah-nee), with Taifa as her middle name and Willis as her last name. Growing up with a strong Afrocentric influence, her Swahili name reflects her roots—Fani meaning ‘prosperous’ and Taifa meaning ‘people.’

Willis’s family relocated to Washington, D.C., during her first-grade year, where her father practiced law as a criminal defense attorney. Following her parents’ divorce, her mother returned to California, while Willis primarily stayed with her father. She pursued political science at Howard University, graduating cum laude in 1993, before moving to Atlanta to attend Emory University School of Law, earning her JD in 1996.

Career:
Willis began her professional journey as a solicitor, prosecuting misdemeanors and city ordinance violations. Notably, she spent 16 years as a prosecutor in the Fulton County district attorney’s office, where she gained prominence for leading the prosecution in the Atlanta Public Schools cheating scandal. This high-profile case involved twelve educators accused of manipulating students’ test answers to inflate standardized test scores, with eleven of them convicted of racketeering in April 2015.

In 2018, Willis transitioned to private practice, and in the same year, she ran for a seat on the Fulton County Superior Court, albeit unsuccessfully. Her career took a different turn in 2019 when she assumed the role of Chief Municipal Judge for South Fulton, Georgia.

District Attorney of Fulton County:
In 2020, Willis achieved a significant milestone by being elected as the district attorney for Fulton County, defeating the six-term incumbent Paul Howard Jr., her former boss. In her role, she gained attention for successfully using Georgia’s RICO statute to prosecute individuals not associated with organized crime. As of 2023, she is utilizing the same statute to prosecute former President Donald Trump and 18 alleged co-conspirators.

2020 Election Influence Investigation:
Willis made headlines when, on February 10, 2021, she initiated a criminal investigation into Donald Trump’s attempts to influence Georgia election officials during the 2020 presidential election. This investigation focused on a telephone call where Trump sought to “find” enough votes to overturn Joe Biden’s victory in Georgia. The subsequent legal proceedings, including the convening of a special grand jury, have brought attention to Willis’s commitment to upholding the integrity of the electoral process.

Atlanta Gang Indictments:
In May 2022, Willis’s office indicted the rapper Young Thug on 56 counts of gang-related crimes under Georgia’s RICO statute, along with felony charges related to illicit firearms and drugs. The trial for these charges commenced on November 27, 2023.

On the day she took the Georgia bar exam, Willis crossed paths with Fred Willis, a videographer whom she later married in 1996. The couple has two daughters together but divorced in 2005. Willis, aside from her legal pursuits, is a fan of crime novelist Janet Evanovich.
